Nick Saban is still expected to be involved with the developing presidential commission for college sports, according to multiple reports.
On Friday, Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reported that Saban held a productive meeting with Cody Campbell, the Texas Tech chairman who is leading the commission. After comments from Saban earlier in the week added some confusion as to whether he’d be involved, Dellenger reported that the commission will “continue developing, with Saban included.”
When news of the President’s plans first broke, Saban was linked to the project as its co-chair. On Wednesday, the former Alabama head coach told ESPN’s Paul Finebaum at the Regions Tradition Pro-Am that he wasn’t sure a commission was necessary.
“First of all, I don’t know a lot about the commission. Secondly, I’m not sure we really need a commission,” Nick Saban said on The Paul Finebaum Show. I think that a lot of people know exactly what the issues are in college football and exactly what we need to do to fix them. I think the key to the drill is getting people together so we can move it forward.”
A report from CBS Sports on Friday said Saban’s seemingly cagey response was a product of the commission’s fledgling status. It hasn’t officially been formalized yet and is still working through “essential details.” That report stated that Saban “recognizes the value” President Donald Trump could bring in delivering a federal solution to the problems facing college athletics.
Dellenger added that membership on the commission is expected to be no more than 10 people, with a goal of “political and cultural diversity.”
An initial report from Yahoo Sports in early May stated the commission intended to “deeply” examine a wide range of topics related to college athletics’ struggling system. Those topics included “the frequency of player movement in the transfer portal, the unregulated booster compensation paid to athletes, the debate of college athlete employment, preserving the Olympic sport structure, the application of Title IX to school revenue-share payments and, even, conference membership makeup and conference television contracts.”
