U.S. Rep. Gabe Evans has introduced a bipartisan bill during National Police Week aimed at renaming the post office in the city of Evans to honor a fallen Weld County deputy.
The legislation proposes changing the name to “Deputy Samuel Kent Brownlee Post Office,” according to a news release from Evans, who represents Colorado’s 8th District.
Brownlee, “a devoted husband, father and stepfather,” served as a deputy with the Weld County Sheriff’s Office for five years until an offender shot and killed him in the line of duty in 2010, the release said.
“Sam Brownlee was extremely proud and dedicated to being a Weld County Deputy,” Weld County Sheriff Steve Reams said in the release. “Sam served honorably until the very end when he gave the ultimate sacrifice in service to his community. Sam Brownlee’s service will never be forgotten.”
Brownlee, who grew up in Greeley, attended the Weld County Post Academy after graduating from Greeley Central High School, according to the Weld County Sheriff’s Office website. He served the Gilcrest and Ault police departments before his career at the sheriff’s office began in 2005.
The Weld County Sheriff’s Office also honored Brownlee in November with the grand opening of the Sam Brownlee Training Center, 14 years after his death.
U.S. Reps. Jeff Crank, Lauren Boebert, Jeff Hurd and Joe Neguse joined Evans to designate the Weld County post office under a new name to memorialize Brownlee.
“As a former cop, I understand the risks the men and women in uniform take to protect our communities,” Evans said. “Deputy Brownlee’s sacrifice is a solemn reminder of that courage, and this is one small way we can ensure his legacy lives on in the community he served.”
