Four finalists have been selected for the new police chief in the city of Evans, and the men will be available next month for a meeting with the public during two days of interviews.
The city will host the finalists to talk with residents and discuss the relationship between the city and the community at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 4 at the Evans Community Complex, 1100 37th St.
The finalists are:
Ryan Baranyos has 25 years of law enforcement experience, most recently as a police captain in Estes Park. He also worked as a lieutenant and sergeant with the Maricopa County (Arizona) Sheriff’s Office. Baranyos’ education includes a master’s degree in human resources, and he’s a graduate of the Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command. Randall Darlin is a 31-year veteran of law enforcement with 13 years in executive positions with the Chicago and Northglenn (Illinois) police departments. He has a law degree from the University of Illinois-Chicago School of Law and is a licensed attorney in Illinois. Jason Janopoulos has worked in police departments in Chicago and Albuquerque, New Mexico, and in leadership roles in both cities. He is fluent in Spanish and has experience working in diverse communities. Janopoulos has a doctorate in education, and he’s a graduate of the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety – Supervision and Management of Police Personnel. Mike Zeller is serving as the Evans’ interim police chief. He has 28 years of experience in law enforcement in Colorado, including in Greeley where he served in multiple leadership roles. Zeller has a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Colorado – Denver, and he’s a graduate of the Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command.The men will be in the area June 4-5 for interviews, presentations, one-on-one conversations and a tour of the community.
Evans City Manager Cody Sims will decide on the new chief after the interviews June 5, likely soon after the finalists’ visits, according to city of Evans communications specialist Daniel Karpiel. Sims will make his decision with input from the community and the city’s executive team, Karpiel added.
Evans City Manager Cody Sims. (Courtesy/City of Evans)The finalists were selected from an original pool of 34 applications and expressions of interest, according to a city news release. Eleven semifinalists were selected from the initial pool. Three of those candidates withdrew their applications.
The eight remaining candidates completed a questionnaire and video interview. The four finalists were selected based on evaluations of that information.
The city used Texas-based Strategic Government Resources, a recruiting firm for local governments, to help with the search.
