The 2025 PGA Championship is up and running at Quail Hollow as golf’s best battle it out in the second major of the year.
Rory McIlroy completed the career Grand Slam by finally securing Masters glory at Augusta National in mid-April.

Now, the 36-year-old will have a great chance to add another major title to his stunning CV as he headlines the field for the PGA Championship.
McIlroy has won four times at Quail Hollow already and will relish teeing it up there again.
But he made a sluggish start to the major week, carding an opening 74 to sit at 3-over, way off the pace set by Day 1 leader Jhonattan Vegas who is at 7-under.
Defending champion Xander Schauffele, Bryson DeChambeau, Justin Thomas and Brooks Koepka are among the big names who have also started slowly.
World No.1 Scottie Scheffler is in a good position after opening up with a 2-under round of 69 while Matt Fitzpatrick, Viktor Hovland and Robert MacIntyre have started well too.

PGA Championship 2025: Field and tee times
The PGA Championship is contested by a maximum field of 156 players.
There is then a cut after round two, which reduces the numbers to around half.
The full field has been confirmed, and all of the world’s best will be competing.
McIlroy, Schauffele and Scheffler headline the action, and they have been grouped together for the first two rounds – they will resume their tournaments at 6:47pm UK time on Friday.
Past winners of the PGA Championship are exempt for life, meaning the likes of Padraig Harrington, Jason Dufner, Shaun Micheel, Vijay Singh, and Martin Kaymer are in action.
Tiger Woods, who has won this major four times, will not be in action as he continues his recovery from Achilles surgery.
The PGA Championship differs from the other four majors in the fact that no amateur players compete and instead, the tournament includes 20 PGA Professionals.
Michael Block, who made a hole-in-one alongside McIlroy in the 2023 PGA Championship, has qualified again this year.

PGA Championship 2025: The Course
The course at Quail Hollow Club, designed by George Cobb in 1959, measures 7,626 yards and is a par 71.
Bad weather has hit Charlotte this week, meaning the course will play long and soft with concerns over the amount of water it has taken.
Despite this, PGA of America officials have gone against calls to introduce ‘lift, clean and place’.
“We do not plan to play preferred lies,” read a message from the PGA of America. “The playing surfaces are outstanding and are drying by the hour. We are mowing the fairways this evening.“We are looking forward to an exciting opening round to the 107th PGA Championship.”
This will be the second time the venue has hosted the PGA Championship, having also done so in 2017 when Justin Thomas claimed glory.
It is mainly known for hosting the Wells Fargo Championship (renamed to the Truist Championship in 2025) each year, and it has done so since 2003.
It is famed for ‘The Green Mile’, which consists of holes 16, 17 and 18.
This is widely considered to be one of the most difficult stretches in golf after hole 16 was modified and moved to the edge of a lake.
At 17, there is a pond that makes landing the ball on the green extremely tricky while 18 is known to be one of the toughest endings in golf.
McIlroy will return to Quail Hollow as a Grand Slam championGettyPGA Championship 2025: What has been said?
Europe’s Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald hit the opening tee shot in the 107th US PGA Championship at 7am on Thursday morning.
A further 66 shots later, the world number 871 was as surprised as anyone to find himself in contention at the top of the leaderboard at Quail Hollow.
“Obviously very pleased with the score, bogey-free in a major,” Donald said.
“Someone just told me it was the lowest first round in a major I’ve had since 2004 or something. Obviously I’ve been trending with all the missed cuts coming into this week!
“But no, it was a pleasant surprise. I got off to a really nice, steady start. I hit a bunch of fairways on the front nine which always makes me feel good about my game.
“I didn’t hit a ton of greens today, but my putter was really good. Not surprisingly the greens were infinitely quicker this morning first group out than they were the last few days [after all the rain].
“But I adjusted very well to them and I made a lot of good, solid putts out there.”
Donald had faced just one question on the state of his game in his pre-tournament press conference, and that came from the moderator, but had certainly not been offended.
“Well, that’s what I signed up to,” he added. “I’m here only because I’m captain of the European Ryder Cup team. I wouldn’t be in this field otherwise.
“It’s a nice invitation and a perk that the Ryder Cup captain gets. I understand that. I understand that my game isn’t where it used to be and that is the focus. So it really doesn’t bother me one bit.
“I suppose it’s a nice little honour to hit the first tee shot to get the tournament under way. I was good with that. The greens were very nice the first nine holes and the pace of play was quite nice too.”
