DOWN THE STRETCH

• Jungle Peace (Umberto Rispoli), 3 for 3 in turf sprints at Santa Anita, stretches out to 1⅛ miles on grass for trainer Phil D’Amato in the Grade III Honeymoon Stakes on Sunday. None of the other five 3-year-old fillies has gone this far either, though Jonathan Thomas’ As Catch Can (Kazushi Kimura) has run well at 1 1/16 miles on synthetic tracks.

• D’Amato also has a strong hand at Pimlico this week. On Friday, Vodka With a Twist (Mike Smith) is a 7-2 morning-line favorite in the Grade III Miss Preakness Stakes sprint for 3-year-old fillies. On Saturday’s Preakness undercard, One Magic Philly (Flavien Prat) is a 9-5 favorite in the Skipat Stakes sprint for fillies and mares, and Balnikhov (Prat) is 9-2 and Divin Propos (Luis Saez) 12-1 against Graham Motion’s 5-2 favorite Trikari (John Velazquez) in the Grade III Dinner Party Stakes on turf.

• Ferndale’s 130-year tradition of racing appears to be over, and the north of the state is left without any scheduled meets, after the Humboldt County Fair’s application for a three-week season in August was rejected by the California Horse Racing Board on Thursday. The 4-3 vote, with “no votes” cast by CHRB chairman Greg Ferraro and members Dennis Alfieri, Damascus Castellanos and Thomas Hudnut, drew angry shouts from the audience in Sacramento. It followed 1 hour and 45 minutes of discussion, testimony and public comment, including a letter from celebrity restaurateur and Ferndale product Guy Fieri about the fair’s importance to that coastal redwoods town.

• Trainer Kathy Walsh died at age 85 on May 8 in Chico. Walsh won 1,231 races and $19.3 million in purses from 1970 to 2021. Her top horse was Georgie Boy, winner of the 2007 Del Mar Futurity, 2008 San Vicente and San Felipe Stakes and 2009 San Carlos Stakes.

• Jockey William Antongeorgi returned to racing Sunday at Santa Anita after a fall from the debuting 3-year-old filly Perfect Smile in Saturday’s ninth race sent him to the hospital for examination.

• At Los Alamitos, Beuteeful is 3 for 3 after the 2-year-old quarter-horse filly and jockey Rodrigo Vallejo won Sunday’s Grade II Robert Adair Kindergarten Futurity by 1½ lengths over 8-1 Fireworks Over Paris and Cruz Mendez. Kristen Watanabe-trained Beuteeful ran 300 yards in 15.301 seconds and paid $4.80.

• Santa Anita bettors can chase a $94,783 pick-six carryover on Friday’s fourth through ninth races.
