Since 1949, the third Saturday in May has been recognized as Armed Forces Day.
The day celebrates and honors the men and women who serve in every branch of the U.S military.
The Weld County Veterans Memorial Committee will host an Armed Forces Day celebration from 11 a.m. to noon at Bittersweet Park, 35th Avenue and 16th Street, Greeley.
General Ed Rice is this year’s speaker. Rice is a retired Air Force general who served as the commander of Air Education and Training Command.
Rice was selected in 2020 as a distinguished graduate of the Air Force Academy. In 2017, he was selected as a Veteran in Blue, which is given to someone who has contributed to the legacy of the Air Force. He was also selected for the Thurgood Marshall College Fund Flag Officers Award and the NAACP Meritorious Service Award.
The Northridge High School Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps will present the colors, and the Greeley Central High School band will perform.
Shawn Harmer, a Weld County Veterans Memorial Committee member, is the master of ceremonies.
The event is free for the public to attend.
