The spiritual leader of the Druze community, Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri, issued a statement welcoming the lifting of US sanctions on Syria, calling for “the ending of unlawful aggressions against each other.”
In the statement dated Thursday, May 15, al-Hijri noted that the mere order from the US President Donald Trump to lift sanctions on Syria represents a “new national liberation from the effects and misdeeds of the fallen regime.”
He expressed hope for the cessation of aggressions among Syrians and for stopping what he termed “violations, accusations, and takfir among us.”
Al-Hijri said in the statement, “Let us have mercy on each other before we seek mercy from others, and may this economic relief reflect positively on the Syrian people, allowing them to rebuild and restore their strength, away from exclusion and marginalization.”
“Let us all live as partners in victories under the roof of a united civil Syria, encompassing all its ethnicities, sects, and colors,” added al-Hijri.
Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri is considered a prominent religious and political figure in the southern Syrian governorate of As-Suwayda, known for his opposition to the new Syrian government.
Al-Hijri views the new government as “exclusionary,” a stance he has reiterated over the past months.
On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump met with the transitional Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Saudi Arabia’s capital, Riyadh, marking the first presidential-level meeting between Washington and Damascus in over 25 years.
On Tuesday evening, Trump announced his decision to lift US sanctions imposed on Syria during the tenure of the ousted regime.
During a speech at the Saudi-US Investment Forum in Riyadh, Trump stated, “It is time to give Syria a chance, and I wish it good luck.”
He added that he made the decision to lift sanctions after discussing the matter with the Saudi Crown Prince and the Turkish President.
A responsible source in the US State Department told Enab Baladi that the United States is still monitoring Damascus’s response to the specific measures previously proposed by Washington.
The official in the department, in response to Enab Baladi‘s questions via email, stated that Trump ordered the cessation of sanctions on Syria to give the country “a chance to be great.”
The aim of easing sanctions is to achieve stability in Syria and push it toward peace, according to the official.
