Barcelona are 90 minutes away from being crowned as champions of LaLiga for the 28th time in their history.
Victory against Espanyol on Thursday night will secure their first title in two years and knock rivals Real Madrid off the Spanish throne.
Barcelona beat their city rivals Espanyol to win LaLiga in 2023GettyThe RCDE Stadium is a familiar setting for league accomplishment at Barca as they won the 2022/23 title there in most recent visit.
However, the celebrations at full-time quickly turned into ugly scenes following an angry reaction from a group of home fans.
Barcelona were 4-2 winners on the night as Robert Lewandowski, Alejandro Balde and Jules Kounde all found the back of the net.
They ensured that the chasing Madrid and Atletico Madrid couldn’t mathematically knock them off the summit with four games to play.
Once the match ended, the players formed and circle to jump up and down on the pitch as club legend Xavi embraced his coaching staff.
The celebratory ring of Barcelona stars entered the centre circle and continued to revel in their latest LaLiga triumph.
But some fans of Espanyol, who had just watched their city rivals win the league title at their ground, seemingly thought that was enough.
Barcelona players and staff brought their gleeful display to an abrupt end when they noticed supporters running onto the pitch.
The newly-crowned champions dashed towards the tunnel whilst an increasing number of Espanyol fans chased them down.
Security personnel were able to intervene and riot police stood at the tunnel entrance to prevent further escalation.

“In the end the celebration is normal, but there comes a point when we are not at home. It was respectful to leave,” Barca boss Xavi said.
Espanyol were staring down the barrel of relegation at that point so the result would have inflicted further misery.
Despite beating Rayo Vallecano 2-1 after defeat to Barcelona, their relegation was soon confirmed as they finished 19th in the table.
They secured an instant top flight return and look set to stay for another season as five points separate them from the bottom three.
Espanyol can confirm their safety by beating Barcelona, although this is a highly unlikely prospect given the visitor’s form this season.
Police had to step in and protect the playersGetty Barcelona could win yet another LaLiga title at EspanyolGettyBarca are currently on a 16-match unbeaten run in LaLiga and most recently beat Madrid 4-3 at home.
They have scored 95 goals in 35 matches, with Lewandowski and Raphinha in the league’s top five scorers on 25 and 18 respectively.
Hansi Flick’s side have already won the Copa del Rey and Supercopa de Espana this season.
Winning LaLiga would mark an impressive treble despite the semi-final heartache they suffered in the Champions League.
Just two points are needed to get the job done and avoid a nervy end to the campaign despite their current four-point lead.
Madrid halted the celebrations on Wednesday night when Jacobo Ramon scored in stoppage-time for a 2-1 win against Mallorca.
