New Uber feature helps users avoid dreaded surcharges – but you’re against the clock ...Middle East

UBER users conscious about their wallets can take advantage of a new feature that can help them avoid falling victim to the app’s surcharges.

But, Americans have been warned that they will be against the clock if they use the new service.

Uber has rolled out what’s known as the price lock pass, which costs $2.99 a month.

This gives Americans the chance to lock in a price of a particular route.

Americans are encouraged to select a route that they take often, so it could be to work, or the gym.

Uber chiefs have confirmed it’s the “easiest way” to stop falling victim to a surcharge.

But, the price lock feature only protects users for one hour.

Uber chiefs revealed they’ve taken customers’ concerns into account.

“What we have heard very clearly from users is that there’s a lot of unpredictability,” Sachin Kansal, the company’s chief product officer, told Axios.

“There’s a lot of concern about things just being expensive.”

By taking advantage of the price lock, users could save up to $50 per month.

The ride pass is being rolled out on a gradual basis, according to the company.

The concept will be trialed in major cities such as Dallas, Orlando, and San Francisco first.

Then it will be rolled out across the rest of the country.

The idea of a price-lock system was tested earlier this year, as reported by Bloomberg.

Uber chiefs have also rolled out another feature aimed at helping customers save money.

Riders can score huge discounts by paying up to 20 journeys up front.

RIVAL STRATEGIES

Uber’s price lock feature comes just months after its main rival, Lyft, rolled out a similar tool.

Similarly, riders can lock in their prices for just $2.99 a month.

And, bosses revealed that the company was addressing customers’ concerns, especially those who don’t use the platform often.

Lyft bosses revealed 35% of users are not regular customers.

“A key pain point for them was a lack of price predictability and stability,” a spokesperson told CBS News last fall.

David Risher, the company’s CEO, admitted surge pricing is “deeply unpopular” among riders.

And, he touted that the company’s price lock feature had been a success.

“The number of active passes has increased every month since November 2024, and 70% of Price Lock riders renew each month,” he told shareholders in a letter.

“It’s been such a hit that in February of this year, we extended the hours to accommodate late-night commutes and other rides.”
