COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- The City of Columbus spent more than $95,000 to rebrand the city's Department of Public Utilities to Columbus Water & Power, according to documents obtained by NBC4 through a public records request.

The city spent $75,000 to expand an existing contract with Columbus-based Irvin Public Relations to include focus groups and research, an updated logo, and two additional editions of Utility Lines, an internal newsletter, according to the records.

Of that $75,000, $55,200 was for 368 hours of focus groups and research.

The research helped "confirm 'Department of Public Utilities' was confusing to our customers," determine the new name, and gauge reaction to concepts for a new logo, according to a city spokesperson.

The two additional editions of the Utility Lines newsletter costs $10,500 and included two full days of photography, the initial design and two revisions, and account management, according to the records.

The city spent $6,250 to finalize the logo design, also part of the $75,000.

In addition to the $75,000, the city also paid another $15,440 to Midwest Graphics & Awards Inc. for screen printing services, $4,560 to PGSG Hercules Inc. for 2,000 water bottles, $520 to Bernstein Lash Marketing LLC. for 1,000 drawstring bags, and $410 to WLC Promotions for 500 dog bandanas.

The city expects future costs to be about $4,155:

1,000 tote bags - $1,350 500 dog bandanas - $410 2,000 coffee mugs - $1,960 3 tablecloths - $435

The spokesperson said promotional items are typically given out at Rise Up CBUS! and other events. Coffee mugs are presented at employee awards, and tablecloths are used at the events to identify the department.

"Employees have been specifically advised to continue using current uniforms -- future replacements for uniforms, logos on vehicles, etc. will include the new logo at no additional cost," the spokesperson said in an email to NBC4. "So, beyond the items listed [above], we estimate future costs will be zero."

According to the department, 1.4 million people in central Ohio receive services from Columbus Water & Power, including water supply, treatment, and distribution. The department also oversees stormwater services and supplies municipal power to nearly 20,000 customers.
