Persistent fatigue? A mini-stroke could be the cause, doctors say

fatigue following a mini-stroke, or transient ischemic attack (TIA), is emerging as a significant concern among healthcare professionals. Recent studies indicate that over half of TIA patients experience fatigue lasting up to one year post-event . This phenomenon raises questions about the underlying mechanisms contributing to prolonged fatigue and necessitates careful monitoring of affected individuals. While the research does not establish direct causation, it highlights a strong correlation between TIAs and persistent fatigue .

More than half of people who experience a transient ischemic attack (TIA), often called a ministroke, report ongoing fatigue for up to a year afterwards, a new study has found.

stroke is a temporary blockage of blood flow to the brain that can mimic a stroke, causing symptoms like numbness, weakness, or confusion that can last anywhere from a few minutes to 24 hours. 

The study involves 354 participants, with 61 per cent reporting fatigue two weeks after the event, and 54 per cent still experiencing fatigue at three, six, and 12 months.

Fatigue is medically described as the persistent and excessive feeling of tiredness or lack of energy which interferes with daily activities, even after adequate rest. 

Particularly, physical fatigue can include muscle weakness, aches, pain, gastrointestinal issues and headaches. 

While mental fatigue entails difficulty concentrating, learning new tasks, slowed reflexes and impaired decision-making.
