KROGER shoppers have been left raging after they launched claims at the chain that is lying to shoppers with fake pricing.

Customers found that the issue came when going to buy sale items, only to see the discount disappear when the item was rung up.

The Guardian found that this problem is not limited to one store, and actually stretches well across the US for Kroger.

An in depth investigation revealed that the issue was discovered in multiple states, burdening untold numbers of Americans with higher food costs than they were expecting.

With things like this, focusing on one example can help provide context for a larger picture of incidents.

In the small town of Belpre, Ohio, Derek and Allison Hadfield were becoming fed up with their local Kroger.

Allison said: “Almost every single time I go in the store, the listed price of an item is NOT what rings up at the register.

“I want Kroger to stop screwing over people especially when they are the only store in town.”

When the family was going to buy a pizza posted as a sale item for $1, it rang up as $1.25, and an 8oz jar of minced garlic listed at the low price of $2.49 cost $3.99 at checkout.

A shopper from Cincinnati told state officials in February: “Every week customers are being duped into thinking some grocery items are on sale.

“The store is full of expired shelf tags showing one price and upon checkout [customers] are being charged a higher price.”

Then, to zoom out, Kroger stores in multiple states showed this pattern.

The outlet found expired tags that resulted in overcharges in 14 of the 26 stores reviewed in Washington DC and 14 states.

These included Arizona, Michigan, Oregon, Virginia and Ohio.

An additional test in showed more than 150 items with expired sale tags for which Kroger was charging more than the sale price.

This produced an average overcharge of about $1.70 per item.

In a statement made by Kroger, the company said that any price tag errors represented “a few dozen examples across several years out of billions of customer transactions annually.

“While any error is unacceptable, the characterization of widespread pricing concerns is patently false.”

WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?

One of the main reasons this can happen is the low staffing levels, allowing mistakes to slip through the cracks, the outlet found.

In Colorado, leaders of the United Food & Commercial Workers Union claim that Kroger is fully aware of the issues, but chronic understaffing is driving it.

The union explains that Kroger stores have tens of thousands of sale tags hanging at any one time, meaning that inaccurate tags can stay on shelves for days or weeks at a time.

Employees in Colorado said that management tells them to fix price tag errors for individual shoppers who complain, but does not do what needs to be done to solve the larger issue.

Kroger’s workforce fell from roughly 465,000 full- and part-time employees in January 2021 to just over 409,000 in February 2025.

Kroger's refund policy

Kroger shoppers can return items with or without a receipt.

All Kroger Co. Family of Stores can accept returns of items purchased at any location within 30 days of purchase.

Returns with receipts:

Customers can use digital or paper receipts to get a refund The refund will be returned in the same payment method the purchase was made. Either going back on a card or handed back in cash

Returns without receipts:

Customers wanting to return more than $10 will receive a store merchandise gift card for the value Customers who spent less than $10 will receive cash

But, again, Kroger has denied that this has anything to do with creating an unstable shopping envrionemtn.

The statement continued: “We intentionally staff our stores to keep them running smoothly while creating an enjoyable place to shop.

“Our staffing decisions are data-driven to balance workload and schedules.”

Kroger has been brought up in many lawsuits alleging misleading pricing policy, allegations which the store has denied again and again.

In Utah, Kroger paid a $2,500 settlement in 2019 to a shopper who accused the company of “falsely and deceptively charging full prices instead of the advertised promotional pricing” covered by a Fresh Values rewards program.
