Kris Srikkanth is of the opinion that the star batsman Shubman Gill is yet to cement his place in the playing XI of the India National Cricket Team in the red-ball format.
In an interaction with India Today, Kris Srikkanth bluntly rejected the idea of handing the Test captaincy to Shubman Gill following the retirement of Rohit Sharma from the longest format of the game. He elaborated:
“You’re not handing the captaincy to KL Rahul or Rishabh Pant. Otherwise, you give it to Jasprit Bumrah. The other choice is Bumrah. You say, ‘Boss, you’re the captain’. And whichever Test match he doesn’t play, you give KL Rahul the responsibility."
I think Bumrah should be the captain - Kris Srikkanth
The 1983 World Cup-winning player further said that the premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah should be handed the captaincy, and he should himself manage his workload accordingly.
“As of now, I think Bumrah should be the captain. If I were the chairman of selectors, I would make Bumrah the captain. And then I’d say, ‘Boss, play whichever matches you want to’. I’d then appoint KL Rahul or Rishabh Pant as vice-captain, because these are certainties in the XI.
A lot is being said about Shubman Gill, but he is yet to score big runs - Kris Srikkanth
Kris Srikkanth further criticized Gill as well as the people who support him, saying that he is yet to prove himself in SENA countries and needs to establish himself in Test cricket before becoming the captain.
Reportedly, Jasprit Bumrah, who was the deputy of Rohit Sharma in Test cricket, has pulled out of the captaincy race to manage his workload.
Meanwhile, Gill is all set to be announced as the new India Test captain at a press conference on May 23 or 24, when the BCCI will be officially announcing the squad for the upcoming five-match Test series against the England National Cricket Team.
