Former Indian cricketer Yograj Singh claims that a Team India filled with youngsters in bound to fall apart. His remarks come after the abrupt decisions of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to retire from Tests just before the England tour. Speaking to news agency ANI, Yograj opined that Rohit and Virender Sehwag were two cricketers who retired prematurely. He claimed that it would have just taken one person to motivate Rohit to play on, giving an example of someone pushing the Hitman to go for a run at 5 AM daily. Yuvraj Singh’s father claimed that a Team India filled with youngsters sans Rohit and Kohli will fall apart.
“If you form a team full of youngsters, it will always fall apart. Maybe Virat feels that he has nothing more left to achieve. I think Rohit Sharma needed just one person to motivate him daily, for example, to go for a run at 5 AM. Rohit and Virender Sehwag are two people who retired too early,” Yograj said.

— ANI (@ANI) May 14, 2025Further, Yograj claimed that he had told Yuvraj at the time of his retirement that it wasn’t the right time to move on. He opined that the Indian Test team had fallen apart in 2011 after many players were removed, retired or were coerced into retirement.
“When many players were either removed, retired, or coerced into retirement in 2011, the team fell apart and has still not stood back up. But everyone’s time comes. I feel a lot of cricket is still left in Virat and Rohit,” he added.
Yograj lamented over the departure of Rohit and Kohli, noting that there was no one in the team to motivate the youngsters going forward.
“The greatest players should play till 50 years of age… I am sad about their retirement as no one is left to motivate the youngsters now,” Yograj claimed.
