The NFL has never been bigger.
For the first time in league history, five different countries around the globe will be hosting NFL games.
The NFL’s global footprint has expanded rapidly in the last few yearsGettyEngland, Ireland, Germany, Spain and Brazil will all see NFL games in 2025.
And the league has already announced that there will be regular season games played in Melbourne, Australia, starting in 2026.
The NFL’s reach has never been mightier than it is now.
The next question isn’t which country is next to host, but rather which event could it be?
As more and more regular season games find themselves being played overseas, how much longer until we see the draft taking place somewhere other than America?
What about the Super Bowl?
Could the sport’s biggest event go global?
What may have seemed like an unfathomable thought a decade ago, isn’t so preposterous now.
Henry Hodgson, NFL UK general manager, appeared on talkSPORT’s Hawksbee & Jacobs afternoon show on Tuesday, and gave more insight on what the future of the NFL and its ever-expanding reach could entail.
“It’s certainly something that gets debated pretty frequently and the Super Bowl is mentioned, the draft is an interesting one as well,” Hodgson said.
The NFL is returning to Brazil for a second straight seasonGetty The NFL has expanded across Europe, having played games in Germany the last few yearsGetty The NFL’s presence in London rivals many cities across AmericaGetty“I think at the moment our focus is playing more games in more markets as opposed to sort of going deeper in any one market.
“So, hence the decision to play a first game in Dublin this year.
“We’re also playing for the first time in Madrid, we announced today that the Miami Dolphins will play against the Washington Commanders at the Bernabéu, that’s obviously an iconic stadium
“I think what you’re going to see, we actually announced at the Super Bowl as well that there’ll be a game in Melbourne next year.
“We played for the first time in Brazil last year, so more than sort of going to the depth of a Super Bowl in London, which we’ll continue to speculate on, and I agree with you, I think London is absolutely capable of hosting an event like that.
“I think it’s mostly about how do we spread across the globe and do more, in more places.”
It sounds like the NFL isn’t satisfied with playing in just five countries.
Expect more and more international locations to be involved over the next half-decade or so.
Meanwhile, the start of the 2025 season will kick off in Philadelphia, as the defending Super Bowl champion Eagles will host the Dallas Cowboys in a heated rivalry matchup to begin the season.
And so while a Super Bowl in London may still be a ways away, it’s also fair to say that it is a whole lot closer to coming to reality than it ever has been before.
The sport’s biggest event taking place in one of the most popular cities in the world, sure would be a sight to behold.
