FLYERS have been warned of a REAL ID registration mistake that could see them being pulled from TSA lines and missing their flights.

The new federal requirement is in effect, and it’s already tripping people up at airport checkpoints across the country.

TSA spokesperson Lisa Farbstein has said the process since the May 7 start date has been mostly smooth, as the vast majority of people already have the right ID.

However, she warned that TSA workers have strict instructions for anyone who has yet to head to their DMV.

“The TSA officer is going to let that individual know about their noncompliance, and they will receive a little slip of paper that indicates that they are not compliant with REAL ID,” Farbstein told ABC local affiliate WKBW.

“There is a code there that they can use to find out more about how to get their REAL ID.”

TSA says most passengers are getting it right, but not all.

“We are seeing a very high rate of compliance with REAL ID licenses or acceptable alternative licenses,” Farbstein said.

“We are seeing compliance rates in the high 80s and 90s in terms of percentage of people using a REAL ID license or alternative.”

But not everyone has good news since the new crackdown.

Consumer experts have warned travelers to be on the lookout for any shady texts or calls informing them how to meet the new federal ID rules.

They fear that scammers could take advantage of the rush to get REAL IDs by stealing sensitive information through phishing.

“The only way to get a REAL ID is by making an in-person trip to the DMV, so if you receive a text message or an email offering to handle the process for you, it’s a scam,” said Katarina Schmieder with the Better Business Bureau of Upstate New York.

“With the deadline come and gone, we could start to see some scam activity in the coming weeks and months.”

Getting scammed could mean showing up with a fake or invalid ID — and that’s where TSA steps in.

TSA says passengers without the correct identification will be stopped.

Applying for a REAL ID

The process varies by state, but residents will need a few documents to apply for a REAL ID before the deadline.

No matter the state, the application process can be started online by scanning and uploading the necessary documents, basic information, and Social Security numbers. Once submitted and reviewed, an in-person visit to the DMV or your state’s department agency is necessary for an attendant to verify the documents.

From there, a thumbprint will be recorded in the system, and a photo will be issued for the ID before it’s mailed.

The documents needed are those that show:

Full legal name (previous driver’s license, passport, etc) Date of birth (like a birth certificate, or an official copy of one) Social Security number (Social Security card) Two proofs of residence (like a utility bill or voter registration card) Lawful status

ACCEPTABLE IDs

Showing up without a valid ID could mean getting pulled aside and missing your flight, even if you thought you were prepared.

Under the new rules, anyone passing through a TSA checkpoint must now show a REAL ID or one of several specific alternatives.

Those include US passport, passport cards, and DHS trusted traveler cards like Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, or FAST.

A permanent resident card or Employment Authorization Card is also valid at the checkpoint.

State-issued Enhanced Driver’s Licenses or Enhanced IDs are allowed, too.

Other acceptable documents include a TWIC card, US Merchant Mariner Credential, or Veteran Health Identification Card.

Even foreign government passports and Canadian provincial driver’s licenses are valid alternatives.

Schmieder said the BBB hasn’t received scam reports locally, yet.

“But that doesn’t mean they aren’t out there, and that doesn’t mean it’s not possible,” she said.

Both TSA and consumer watchdogs are urging travelers to stay alert and only trust official DMV offices for REAL ID processing.
