Charlie Kelman’s 88th minute penalty squared the first leg up after two quick second half goals had turned the tie for Stockport, who came from a goal down to lead in London, before having to settle for a 2-2 draw.
Stockport will return to their home stadium at Edgeley Park in confident mood having won seven of their last eight matches of the regular season, and have lost just once since the end of February in any competition.
Dave Challinor’s side, who finished the league season in third place, have been in barnstorming home form since the turn of the year, winning nine of their last 10 matches on their home patch since mid January.
Leyton Orient secured their place in the play-offs with victory at Huddersfield on the final day of the season, putting together a run of eight wins in their last 10 matches, including all of their last five to reach the top six.
Only the record breaking Birmingham side won more matches away from home in the third tier than Richie Wellens’ side, who have won five of their last six matches in preparation for Wednesday’s decider for a place in the play-off final at Wembley.
When the two sides met in the regular season, each team managed to win away from home, with the east London side triumphing 4-1 in Manchester back in September.
One of these sides will be just a game away from returning to the second tier of English football after a lengthy spell away, with Stockport having last competed 23 years ago, while Orient will be looking to end a 44 year wait for second tier football.
Both teams are on fantastic winning runs heading into Wednesday night’s second leg, though Stockport’s home advantage should give them the upper hand in what should be an entertaining affair – a 2-1 home win perhaps seeming most likely.
