THE saga over Aaron Rodgers’ future could take a twist no-one expected.

Rodgers has so far been expected to finally end speculation by signing for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

But now fellow quarterback Derek Carr, 34, has surprisingly retired from the New Orleans Saints.

And Robert Griffin III is joining pleas for the Saints to approach 41-year-old Rodgers, a four-time MVP in the NFL.

The Green Bay Packers legend is a free agent after the New York Jets released him.

The Steelers have long been favourites to recruit the Super Bowl XLV winner.

And Rodgers has reportedly been in regular contact with team chiefs.

He’s also flown out to visit head coach Mike Tomlin in Pittsburgh and also trained with wide receiver DK Metcalf.

It all means Rodgers has been tipped to make a decision soon.

And every sign pointed to him agreeing a deal with the Steelers, rather than retiring.

But Carr suddenly quitting has exposed the Saints’ shortage of QBs.

They already knew a shoulder injury would probably rule the Californian out for most of the 2025 campaign.

It leaves the Saints with just three quarterbacks – all inexperienced.

Tyler Shough is a rookie and second-round pick, second-year QB Spencer Rattler has a 0-6 record from six starts, and Jake Haener was a fourth-round pick in 2023.

That’s one big reason why ex-Washington Redskins QB Griffin claiming Saints coach Kellen Moore has no choice but to call Rodgers.

The former ESPN analyst reckons some of the team’s proven stars don’t have enough years left in NFL – so they need an established QB NOW.

He told his Outta Pocket podcast: “Not for Mickey Loomis, not for Kellen Moore.

“But they need to call Aaron Rodgers for Alvin Kamara. They need to call Aaron Rodgers for Demario Davis.

“They need to call Aaron Rodgers for Cam Jordan… for Brandin Cooks… for Justin Reed… for the honeybadger himself, Tyrann Mathieu.

“I say that because those veterans don’t have time to go through a rebuild.

“They don’t have much time left on their clock when it comes to NFL years.”

Griffin then rammed home his message by adding: “So if you’re going to call a guy that you know can get the job done, that you know will instill confidence into that locker room, Aaron Rodgers.”

Luring the icon at this stage might seem a tall order.

But there could be a tiny glimmer of hope for the Saints if they do come in for Rodgers.

That’s because its claimed he might be holding back on a decision until seeing the NFL schedule.
