A POPULAR UK pub is now banning certain people from entering its premises on Friday and Saturday nights.

The new regulations have stirred a mix of reaction from punters after the change was announced on social media last weekend.

The New Masons Arms in Caerphilly says it will no longer allow people under the age of 25 into the pub on Friday and Saturday nights.

From 7pm on these two nights, the Welsh pub will change how it operates by not letting in people aged under 25.

Those that have been there before 7pm will have their last drinks served at 6:30pm.

In a Facebook post, the New Masons Arms wrote: “As a pub from day 1 we have tried to do our best for the community, we have a lot of sports team and sponsor a lot of young individuals in their chosen sport, we try and do as many fundraisers as possible and always have our customers interests first.

“The minority have spoilt it for the rest of you, it’s getting to a point that there’s a lack of respect for the pub and it’s patrons.”

They cited a ban on anyone suspected or caught using drugs, as well as anyone refusing to be searched.

In caps, it was added: “Drugs or lack of respect for the older patrons or the pub will not be tolerated.”

Announcement of the new rules sparked varied responses on the Facebook post, with one who commented: “So kick out the troublemakers, not everyone who happens to share a protected characteristic.”

Others questioned the legality of the pub’s operations: “Be careful with this as I’m not sure you’re legally allowed to do it.

“Discrimination based on age is unlawful in many areas, including employment, providing goods and services.”

Another added: “This could become a serious reputational and legal issue—especially if the policy is seen as punishing an entire group for the actions of a few.

“Just something to think carefully about before enforcing or promoting it any further.”

But some have praised the change: “Good for you hope they have respect.”

A second said: “Well done.

“More pubs need that attitude towards drugs.”
