Bermane Stiverne didn’t think much of Deontay Wilder’s power.
The Haitian-Canadian boxer became the first man to take Wilder the distance when they squared off for the first time in 2015.
Wilder knocked out Stiverne in the first round of their rematch in 2017GettyUp to that point, ‘The Bronze Bomber’ had knocked out his first 32 opponents.
However, Stiverne stayed on his feet for 12 rounds en route to a unanimous decision defeat that saw Wilder crowned the new WBC heavyweight champion.
Shortly after their inaugural encounter, Stiverne insisted Chris ‘The Nightmare’ Arreola, whom he had beaten to lay claim to the green and gold strap a year prior, hit harder than the man many consider to be the biggest puncher of the 21st Century.
“Listen, I’ve been in the ring with both of them, and it is not what you think, man,” Stiverne told Tru School Sports in 2016.
“Everybody talks about this great power that the man [Wilder] got.
“Nah, I will tell you one thing. [Chris] Arreola hits way harder than Wilder…
“I’m not saying the man is trash, but the hype that they put behind him, the media.
“His record makes you think ‘Oh wow’. But once you get in the ring with him, it is different.
“It is not the same thing. The only right hand he hit me with that hurt was in my eye.”
Stiverne’s words came back to bite him when he was viciously knocked out in the first round by Wilder two years later in a rematch at the Barclays Center in New York City.
Getty‘B. Ware’ was decked twice at the end of the opening stanza before a powerful flurry left him sprawled against the bottom rope in an image that has become synonymous with both men’s careers.
Stiverne fought three more times after his second crack at Wilder, losing to Joe Joyce, Trevor Bryan and Jonathan Guidry.
His two wins against Arreola remain the crowning achievements of his turbulent career.
Stiverne defeated Arreola via unanimous decision in 2013 for the WBC silver heavyweight trinket.
They were then ordered to face each other for the vacant WBC world title one year later, when Vitali Klitschko retired from professional boxing.
This time, Stiverne didn’t leave it in the hands of the judges as he proceeded to flatten Arreola with a dynamite right hand in round six.
