'Watson' Season 1 Ending: How Did [Spoiler] Die? What's the Next Mystery? ...Middle East

Watson concluded its first season with a major death — but how will the story continue into season 2?

During the Sunday, May 11, episode of the hit CBS series, Watson (Morris Chestnut) and the rest of his team thought they had to choose between Stephens and Adams (Peter Mark Kendall). They opted to perform the life-saving brain surgery on Stephens while still finding a way to keep Adams from dying.

Watson, meanwhile, found out that James Moriarty (Randall Park) was blackmailing those around him for access to his work. This set off a chain of events that put Stephens and Adams’ lives at risk — but also offered Watson a way to come face to face with his mortal enemy again.

In order to take Moriarty down, Watson used Ingrid (Eve Harlow) to trick him. Moriarty was then infected with an illness that brought him back to Watson, who saved his life. But while Watson fixed the health scare — temporary blindness — he didn’t step in to treat another issue.

Moriarty woke up to the news that he would have a stroke soon. Despite Watson knowing it would happen, he chose to watch Moriarty die in the hospital bed. Watson was also able to use the showdown with Moriarty to acquire enough treatment to save Adams as well.

The season ended with a time jump where Watson was dating someone new. Before sitting down for dinner, Watson put away a box with his late friend Sherlock Holmes’ possessions.

Before taking on the role in a show based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle‘s Sherlock Holmes stories, Chestnut, 56, reflected on how Watson would acknowledge the legendary detective.

“I did not consult any other [past] Watson [performances]. I did of course read some of the books and I looked at some of the other projects out there. For me, I felt that this character was different because the other Watsons are primarily not the focus,” Chestnut exclusively told Us Weekly in January. “The story is always told from Sherlock’s perspective. So this story is being told from Watson’s perspective in a very specific way. We’re part of the mythology, but the clinic and being a detective is not part of the mythology.”

Chestnut didn’t rule out the chance that viewers would get to meet the iconic detective on screen, adding, “I wish I knew if we were ever going to see Holmes in any type of capacity.”

He continued: “When Robert Downey Jr. is done with the Marvel universe, he can come on down. Robert can come on down. I think all of the portrayals of Holmes that I’ve seen have been just phenomenal performances. They all stepped up to the plate. So I’d be glad to have any of them.”

Watson has been renewed for season 2 and is currently streaming on Paramount+.
