Pat McAfee’s beef with Gunther could well stretch back further than the events of last month’s Raw after WrestleMania.

The Ring General snapped on that show and attacked Michael Cole, which prompted McAfee to jump in and save his broadcast partner, only to be put to sleep in a brutal hold.

While general manager Adam Pearce suspended the former World Heavyweight Champion for his behavior, Raw’s commentator challenged him to a match at Backlash, which will be his first singles bout since WrestleMania two years ago.

Should McAfee steal a win, it will be one of the biggest upsets in WWE history.

And while animosity between the pair first boiled over at ringside a few weeks ago, it seems Gunther might have previously had McAfee in his sights.

The towering grappler has been a near unstoppable force in WWE since first signing via NXT in 2019, having lengthy runs with both the Intercontinental and world heavyweight belts.

He lost the latter to Jey Uso at WrestleMania 41, and in the build up to that bout, was involved in an incident with McAfee and a spectator that eagle-eyed fans will remember well.

On Monday Night Raw back in February, Gunther accidentally caught a fan with his jacket at the start of the Netflix broadcast live from Nashville.

His rival Uso had been celebrating with the fans to open the show, which is when the Ring General pounced.

As he attacked Uso, Gunther stripped off his jacket and launched it, he thought, straight into the face of Pat McAfee who was stood away behind the commentary desk.

The NFL star turned broadcaster showed he still retains his swift reactions, though, ducking the jacket which promptly then caught a fan in the front row flush in the face.

Those watching were left concerned by the impact, which clearly seemed to rock the unwitting fan, whose head snapped back before they were seen kneeling or falling to the floor while those around them checked on their welfare.

Fellow fans nearby pointed at the commotion, too, while McAfee himself could be seen turning to check on the individual while the camera panned away.

Viewers watching couldn’t miss it either, one commenting: “I think Gunther wanted to hit Pat with the jacket but it hit the kid instead.”

Another followed up: “Pat ducked, the coward!”

One quipped: ‘Oh man, he’s getting sued,’ while another went on to observe: “Zipper to the grill!”

Another comment echoed: “If you get hit with the zip part it’s night night, while one more said: “That jacket probably gave the most devious chop to that kids chin.”

While the unfortunate moment with the fan on Raw was certainly an accidental hiccup to Gunther’s night, it didn’t get much better for the towering world champ afterward.

Pat McAfee has proved popular as a WWE commentator and will now face GuntherWWE McAfee watched on as Gunther demolished Uso on Raw in February, before feeling the wrath himselfGetty

Having recovered following his attack, Uso grabbed the mic and made his WrestleMania decision clear – he’d be challenging Gunther for his world title in Vegas come April.

Uso had been choosing between Gunther and Cody Rhodes for his ‘Mania bout after winning the Royal Rumble.

Things, of course, went his way at the big show too, and he walked out as the new champion.

Gunther, meanwhile, will now go on to face McAfee as they finally have a chance to squash their beef on Saturday night.
