But now, a new warning has urged people with hayfever against buying injections to treat allergy symptoms from beauty clinics and online pharmacies – amid concerns about serious side effects and efficacy.
The NPA, which represents more than 6,000 independent community pharmacies, found 45 per cent of over 350 pharmacies surveyed have recently had queries from patients about using Kenalog for the seasonal allergy.
The association has urged people not to buy Kenalog from illegitimate sellers, warning that the medication poses a risk to patient health – and could be fake.
But it has known side-effects including increased blood pressure, dizziness, severe abdominal pain, depression, loss of bone density, blindness and even death.

In 2022, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and the Committees of Advertising Practice (CAP) issued a joint enforcement notice about the advertising of Kenalog injections on social media.
However, The i Paper has found numerous beauty salons around the country advertising the drug on their websites and social media pages for up to £90 per dose.
“It’s not licensed in the UK for the treatment of hay fever, so it shouldn’t be something that’s offered to patients,” pharmacist Thorrun Govind told The i Paper.
The NPA advises anyone with concerns about a medication bought online, including patients who have taken Kenalog for hay fever after purchasing it from an unregulated provider, to speak to their pharmacist.

Ms Govind said there are many ways people can protect themselves against the effects of hay fever, not all of which involve medicine.
