Mother Nature made them wait, but once LSU and Arkansas got going, 9 innings weren’t enough. At 1:17 a.m. in Baton Rouge, the Tigers walked it off in extra innings for a thrilling 5-4 win.
LSU broke the scoring ice in the bottom of the 3rd and held a 2-1 lead after 4 innings. Arkansas, though, scored the next 3 innings over the 5th-7th innings, leading 4-2 at the stretch. The Tigers tied it up 4-4 with 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th. The 8th and 9th innings were scoreless.
It was still a 4-4 game in the bottom of the 10th. For LSU, Jared Jones led off the frame with a single to left field. He advanced to 2nd base on a wild pitch and a ground out moved him to 3rd base with 1 out. Ethan Frey flied out to center field and it was enough to plate Jones for the winning run. The call of safe was confirmed upon review.

Zach Root gave the Razorbacks 6 innings, allowing 2 earned runs on 5 hits over 91 pitches, striking out 6 without issuing a base on balls. The Hogs had a chance to move up in the SEC standings as Florida defeated Texas, but instead remain 2 games back with 5 to go (40-10, 17-8 SEC).
Anderson went 5.2 IP for LSU, allowing 3 earned runs on 7 hits over 109 pitches, striking out 10 while walking 1. The Tigers turned to Shores for 1.1 innings before Cowan, the game’s winning pitcher, tossed 3 scoreless frames.
LSU improves to 39-11 overall and 16-9 in SEC play with the win.
“That win will pay value for a lot of reasons,” Tigers coach Jay Johnson said on the LSU Sports Radio Network “Not for the goals the team has or for what we want to accomplish, but I felt like we got a real competitive nature back tonight, which was really important. The play was better.”
Game 2 is set for 6:30 p.m. ET on Saturday.
