UNC 2025 Spring Commencement: Here’s What You Need To Know Before Attending ...Middle East

UNC’s spring 2025 commencement ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 10 at 7 p.m. in Kenan Stadium and feature soccer legend Mia Hamm as the ceremony’s guest speaker. Ahead of the big event, the university shared some rules and tips for both guests and participants to follow.

UNC is asking graduates to arrive at the Loudermilk parking lot at 5:30 p.m. A valid One Card will be required for graduates to enter the ceremony. Gates 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6 of Kenan Stadium will open at 6 p.m. for guests.

All public parking lots on UNC’s campus will be available for graduates and guests. Those include Ehringhaus Lot, Craige Deck, Park Place, Graham Circle, Nash Lot, Jackson Deck, Cobb Deck, and Cardinal Deck.

Attendees can also use the Friday Center park and ride lot. The Chapel Hill Transit Tar Heel Express will provide shuttle service from 5 p.m. until 45 minutes after the completion of the ceremony.

The ceremony will cause various changes to the regular flow of traffic around campus. Ahead of the ceremony, Ridge Road will become a one-way southbound road between Country Club Road and the Rams Head Parking deck from 5 to 7 p.m. Afterwards, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., it will allow one-way northbound traffic between the Rams Head Parking Deck and Country Club Road and one-way southbound traffic from the Rams Head Parking Deck to Manning Drive. Manning drive will allow three lanes of eastbound and one land of westbound traffic ahead of the ceremony, which will switch at 7 p.m.

The university says that guests using rideshare services must utilize the designated drop-off and pick-up location, which is the South Columbia bus lane between Manning Drive and South Road.

There is a strict clear bag policy in place at the main commencement ceremony, as well as at each of the departmental ceremonies. However, small clutch purses no larger than 4.5 inches by 6.5 inches are permitted for graduates. Guests will be subjected to the clear bag policy without exception. All permissible bags are subject to search.

Graduates can bring two unopened 20-ounce or smaller water bottles per person, or empty water bottles that can be filled upon entry to Kenan Stadium. UNC asks that guests bring their own refillable bottles.

UNC has a list of items prohibited from the ceremony. That includes food and beverages, noisy items such as noise makers or fireworks, and banners/signs larger than 8.5 inches by 11 inches. Broadly, any item that “poses a safety hazard or detracts from the ability of others to enjoy the event” will not be permitted.

The ceremony will be livestreamed on several platforms for remote viewing, including the university’s YouTube channel. UNC students who would like to attend the ceremony can do so without registering or purchasing a ticket.

UNC says that while it supports the First Amendment rights of its graduates, it prohibits any form of protest that limits the abilities of other guests to “hear a speaker.” Protests also must not cause a “significant disruption of University operations.” UNC says those who fail to comply with their policies on demonstrative events will be subject to arrest.
