Growing up in Belfast as the eldest of eight children, Margaret left school with few qualifications and helped bring up her younger siblings.

It sparked off a love of wanting to see younger people progress, but little did Margaret know that she would go on to become a headteacher.

“I never would have believed I would end up having a career like that – especially after failing my 11 Plus!”

The mum of two and grandmother of five was delighted when the team at her care home arranged for the retired headteacher to go back into the classroom by visiting Homer First School in Windsor.

She told The i Paper that encouraging and praising pupils is vitally important in helping them reach their full potential but also believes working for longer in a job she loved helped her keep mentally active.

“After helping look after my brothers and sisters, the thought of working with children really appealed to me. I loved helping teach my brothers and sisters and they have all gone on to do really well.”

“Despite facing setbacks in her own education after failing her 11 Plus, Margaret’s career is a testament to never give up as great achievements are still possible.

She added: “Here at Mountbatten Grange, we see time and time again how volunteering for local charities brings residents a sense of nostalgia for their working life, and subsequently increases confidence, joy and meaningful social interactions – all qualities which are often not appreciated during the daily workload.

“Margaret’s story is a powerful reminder to appreciate the positives which come with work and that it’s never too late to make a difference – no matter how old we get.”
