The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has shown interest in hosting the 2027 World Test Championship (WTC) Final. The red-ball tournament started in 2019, and the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has hosted all three finals (2021, 2023 and 2025).
BCCI wish to host WTC Final 2027
The BCCI had wanted a change of venue for the WTC Final for some time now. Then BCCI Secretary and now International Cricket Council (ICC) Chairman Jay Shah had spoken about it less than a year ago. And it seems like that might just happen. BCCI expressed desire to host the final last month during the ICC meeting in Zimbabwe.
“India expressed their intention to bid for the 2027 final at a meeting of the ICC’s chief executives committee in Zimbabwe last month. The BCCI is represented on the ICC committee by its chief executive, Arun Singh Dhumal, while his predecessor Jay Shah is chair of the ICC, so a formal Indian bid would be regarded as a fait accompli,” a report in the Guardian stated.

A big reason why England was the venue for the WTC Final was because of the interest in Test cricket in the country. Moreover, other cricket boards weren’t that keen on hosting the final when the tournament was initially decided. The ECB wants a quick ruling from the ICC, who aren’t yet 100% sold on BCCI hosting the WTC Final 2027.
“While the ECB had not assumed it would host the WTC final in perpetuity, the English summer and a strong domestic ticket market regardless of which teams qualify make it a natural venue. The ECB is understood to be pushing for a quick decision, as it will need time to arrange an additional home Test for England in 2027 if the WTC final is taken elsewhere,” the report added.
ICC’s concern regarding India as hosts
A reason why the ICC aren’t exactly certain about granting the BCCI the hosting rights of the WTC Final is due to fear of low crowd turnout. We have seen fans flock in huge numbers for the last two finals despite England not qualifying for them. The ICC thinks that if India doesn’t qualify for the final, we might see the ticket sales take a massive hit.
“The ICC has concerns about taking the WTC final to India, however, chiefly the prospect of poor ticket sales should India fail to qualify. Next month’s final at Lord’s is sold out for the first four days, while the 2023 final at the Oval was also sold out despite England not being involved,” the report said.
