TIME is running out for Americans to claim up to $5,000 from a data breach related class action lawsuit settlement.
The only thing needed for eligible people to claim the money is relevant documentation of losses.
GettyEligible Americans have just weeks to claim the money[/caption]It relates to a settlement being paid by financial institution FloridaCentral Credit Union over claims it failed to prevent a 2024 data breach.
This settlement benefits anyone who whose private information was potentially compromised in the breach on May 16, 2024.
Plaintiffs claim FloridaCentral failed to protect their information in a breach that affected the email system.
This breach also allegedly compromised other sensitive information such as Social Security numbers and account data.
FloridaCentral Credit Union is based in Florida and has more than 200,000 members.
However, FloridaCentral has not admitted to any wrongdoing regarding the breach.
The institution is paying an undisclosed sum to resolve the class action lawsuit.
Terms of this settlement allow claimants to receive either a flat payment or a larger payment for documented losses.
These flat payments are estimated to be $100 per class member.
However, larger payments of up to $5,000 are also available for those with documented losses.
These might include identity theft expenses, credit monitoring costs and more.
In addition, all class members can get three years of free credit monitoring.
This includes bureau credit monitoring, dark web monitoring and identity theft insurance coverage of up to $1 million as well as fully managed identity recovery services.
Claimants just need to provide documentation of losses, such as bank statements, credit reports, receipts or police reports.
However, anyone looking to make a claim needs to move fast.
The deadline for claim forms to be submitted falls on June 2 – just a matter of weeks away.
A final approval hearing is scheduled for June 16, 2025.
Elsewhere, Americans affected by another data breach between August 30 and September 1, 2023 has just a few days to make a claim.
PostMeds Inc. has agreed to a $7.5 million class action lawsuit to resolve the claim.
The company has not admitted to any wrongdoing.
The deadline for class members to submit a valid claim form for this data breach settlement is May 12.
