Consultant Drees & Sommer and architects Auer Weber have surveyed Munich’s Olympic Village for its solar power potential, finding that around two-thirds of its roof space is suitable for photovoltaic (PV) installations.
Commissioned by the state capital of Munich and the Bavarian State Office for Historic Preservation, the team created a 3D model of the 40-hectare village, built for the 1972 Summer Games, to calculate the intensity of solar irradiation.
Their analysis shows that around 65,000 sq m of roof area is well or very well suited to photovoltaics, and a further 11,000 sq m is to a limited extent.
Drees & Sommer said photovoltaic panels could power around half the households.
As well as roofs, the team also examined the PV potential of façades and balconies. The village includes high-rises, split-level houses, up to five-storey terraced and apartment buildings and single-storey bungalows.
The results will be documented in the form of maps and a guidebook for the 3,500 households living in the village.
Triumph and tragedy
The challenge will be to make the installations fit in with the village, which is protected as an historic monument. The site marks athletic triumphs but also the tragedy of the Black September massacre.
The village and the Olympic Park are on the German Tentative List of Unesco World Heritage Sites.
“It is important that PV systems blend harmoniously with surrounding listed buildings without dominating the overall appearance,” said Adrian Gessner of Auer, who added they were also investigating how the electricity generated can be used and stored.
The guidebook will advise on where PV systems can be installed and their colour.
Also supporting the project are stauss processform, Sailer Stepan Tragwerkteam München, and Uniola.
