They must cover more than 2,000 miles over the course of 21 stages, mostly in Italy, including some challenging mountainous terrain.

Five former winners will be at the start line, Primož Roglič (2023), Jai Hindley (2022), Egan Bernal (2021), Richard Carapaz (2019) and Nairo Quintana (2014).

When is the 2025 Giro d’Italia?

The Giro d’Italia starts in Durres, Albania on Friday 9 May and finishes three weeks later on 1 June in the Vatican Gardens, Vatican City, Rome.

What is the Giro d’Italia route?

Once on Italian soil, cyclists will travel from Alberobello in Puglia in southern Italy to Matera over stages four and five.

Stages 9, 10 and 11, will see them travel though Tuscany visiting Siena, Lucca, Pisa and Viareggio.

Staying in the Veneto region, stages 14 and 15 will go from Treviso to Asiago via Nova Gorica.

Stage 16 starts in Piazzola sul Brenta, west of Venice and ends in San Valentino in the mountains, from there the competitors will remain in mountainous terrain until the final stage (21) when they are in the capital Rome.

Each stage will be broadcast in full, accompanied by The Breakaway, a pre- and post-stage show hosted by Orla Chennaoui, featuring expert analysis and guest appearances throughout the three weeks.

Who are the favourites to win?

At the moment, the competitor tipped for overall winner is Primoz Roglic, the Slovenian cyclist who won the race in 2023. The 35-year-old has odds of 11/8 to win this year.

Second favourite for overall winner is Spanish cyclist Juan Ayuso at 5/2 and British cyclist Adam Yates has made it into the top three with odds of 9/1 on him triumphing in three weeks time.
