National University was named a recipient Thursday of a $100,000 grant to create discussion groups on how we remember and memorialize war.
The grant, from the National Endowment for the Humanities, is part of $9.55 million in awards announced Thursday for 68 humanities projects across the country.
National University’s project is titled “Legacies of War: Memorials and Memories of the American Civil War & the Vietnam War.”
The one-year project begins with a 32-hour preparatory session for six discussion leaders, followed by two five-month discussion groups for up to 25 participants per group. The plan is to focus “on the memory of war and public memorialization.”
According to the NEH, projects received grant funding as part of its “A More Perfect Union initiative,” to explore America’s story and celebrate its cultural heritage in advance of the 250th anniversary, in 2026, of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
“The National Endowment for the Humanities is proud to support the institutions and individuals who deepen our understanding of the past through rigorous scholarly research, enrich public knowledge through educational programs, exhibitions, and documentaries, and safeguard our nation’s cultural heritage for future generations,” NEH Acting Chairman Michael McDonald said in a statement.
Other California awards went to Headfirst Arts & Media, Inc., to produce a documentary about the life of Rywka Lipszyc, a 14-year-old Orthodox Jewish girl whose diary was found atAuschwitz in 1945, and to the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles to digitize and catalogue approximately 10,000 items from its permanent collection.
