The San Diego College of Continuing Education on Thursday celebrated the $50-million renovation of the 275-seat theater at the Educational Cultural Complex.
More than 150 people attended the ceremonial groundbreaking, including employees, students, community members, partners and local elected officials
The preservation and renovation project for the ECC theater in Mountain View includes approximately 27,000 square feet of upgrades – with 3,200 square feet of new construction.
Enhancements include installing modern acoustic panels, sound and lighting controls, updated and accessible entries, foyer areas and seating. New spaces that welcome public use from the surrounding community will be incorporated, such as updated exterior patios and a marketplace.
“This renovation is not just about restoring a building; it’s about honoring a rich legacy and investing in a future where the arts continue to thrive and serve our community for decades,” said SDCCE President Tina M. King.
The project will be funded through a $35 million state grant and Measure HH, a $3.5 billion bond intended to provide for new and renovated classrooms, labs and other facilities at campuses throughout the San Diego Community College District.
The design by HGA of San Diego, which also was behind the Jacobs Music Center renovation project, came to life after community sessions with students, faculty and stakeholders.
Construction is being managed by PCL Construction and is expected to be completed by December 2026.
Subsequent phases will include a large, new community room for theater overflow and public events. There are also plans for a new “Living Archive” cultural center to preserve and share the theater’s legacy.
The ECC opened in 1972 and has hosted Coretta Scott King, Stevie Wonder, Maya Angelou, Shirley Caesar, James Meredith and Jesse Jackson.
