The Trial turns lax parenting into a crime – I couldn’t look away ...Middle East

News by : (inews) -

One-off 5 drama The Trial takes this idea and runs with it, depicting a not-too-distant future where parents can be tried alongside their children as accessories to their criminal acts.

For what crime exactly? Well, that’s something hard-nosed Judicial Inquisitor Sarah Willis (Derry Girls’ Saoirse-Monica Jackson) is keeping to herself for now – for dramatic effect, mainly, saving the truth bomb for just the right moment. But the parents are oblivious, thinking their daughter has potentially got involved in a group eco-terrorist act.

Insisting they have nothing to hide, Inquisitor Willis – steely and no-nonsense to the point of grating – is determined to catch the Sinclairs out. Throughout the intense hour-long interrogation, David and Dionne are grilled about everything – who they are, how they got together, how they raised Teah, and how they decided they were, as it’s awkwardly phrased, “child creation compatible” in the first place. With each question, their united resolve collapses faster than a pyramid of playing cards.

Miles, Skinner and Jackson take up the majority of the drama’s runtime, facing off in what almost feels like a three-handed play in one room. The Sinclairs are desperate to prove that they are good parents and clear their name, while Wallis seems to have already concluded otherwise.

However, with just one episode to build things up and conclude them, The Trial is done an injustice by being too short, and the end comes far too quickly. Police procedurals have a habit of being stretched too long, convoluting their own mystery to fill the run time, so it’s a show of restraint to pack this story down into an hour and keep every minute interesting. But with just an extra episode or two, the suspense would have held out, and this world would have felt just that tiny bit more whole.
