Officials are investigating a brazen attempt to steal a high-end car from a University City home’s driveway overnight.
Early Thursday, police answered a call in the 9000 block of Montrose Way, in the Vista La Jolla community, about an attempted car theft.
Montrose WayThe owner of the $300,000 Ferrari — not a Lamborghini — was alerted early Thursday to a man tampering with his car outside, according to Onscene.Media.
When the owner went outside to confront him, the man, who had a tow truck that already had the car loaded on it, told the owner that he was a repo agent taking the car — which he incorrectly called a Lamborghini — for non-payment.
When the owner of the car began taking photos of the man and his truck, he unloaded the Ferrari and left the scene.
When police arrived, they discovered that the tow truck had stolen plates and that the truck also had fake contractor licenses on its sides. The tow bar also left significant damage to the Ferrari’s front end.
The San Diego Police Department is investigating the incident.
