MACY’S is planning a new store in an unexpected shopping area.
The news comes amid recent store closures in the shopping center.
Macy’s has confirmed the opening of a new location Miami, despite ongoing closures in South FloridaGettyMacy’s is gearing up to open a new store at Midway Crossings in Miami-Dade, even as the department store chain closes other retail locations across South Florida.
The news comes via Sterling Organization, the West Palm Beach-based property management company for Midway Crossings, which lists Macy’s as “coming soon” on its website.
The new Macy’s will join major retailers such as Costco, Marshalls, Burlington, Aldi, and Ross at the 55-year-old shopping center.
A map of the mall shows the future Macy’s location near Five Below and Metro by T-Mobile, close to the food court.
While construction has yet to begin and no official opening date has been announced, a Sterling representative told the Miami Herald that a lease is in place.
Macy’s corporate office has remained quiet about the new development.
“We’re not able to comment on any specific plans at this time,” said Isabella Hershey, external communications associate for Macy’s.
“As we finalize these plans, we will share more details.”
The upcoming store is expected to span 31,296 square feet, making it one of the larger retailers within Midway Crossings.
Only the new Micro Center, at 37,500 square feet, will be bigger within the main mall footprint.
Meanwhile, neighboring stores like Burlington, Marshalls, Ross, and Aldi are smaller in comparison.
The addition of Macy’s is notable, given the company’s recent announcement that it would close 66 stores nationwide, including five in South Florida.
Locations at Boynton Beach Mall and various furniture outlets in Broward County were among those affected as part of Macy’s “Bold New Chapter” strategy to optimize store performance and restructure its footprint.
Midway Crossings, formerly known as Midway Mall, has seen significant transformation in recent years.
Opened in 1970 and rebranded as Mall of the Americas in 1987, the center adopted its current name in 2022 during a revitalization effort.
Though not considered one of Miami’s luxury shopping destinations, the center’s convenient location just off the Palmetto Expressway.
Macy’s already has high-profile stores in South Florida at Aventura Mall, Dadeland Mall, The Falls, and Miami International Mall.
The decision to open at Midway Crossings marks a shift toward capturing everyday shoppers in more residential, workaday neighborhoods.
With its substantial square footage and inclusion among national tenants, the new Macy’s could become a major anchor for the shopping center.
The move signals that while Macy’s may be shrinking its national footprint, it remains committed to growing strategically in key regional markets.
