CASH-STRAPPED Americans are set to receive a one-time relief check worth up to $400.
The payments have been branded the first in their kind by officials and are aimed at offsetting the impacts of inflation.
SplashNew York governor Kathy Hochul has unveiled a program designed to help Americans with the cost of living[/caption]For several years, families have been grappling with record high inflation and feeling the squeeze when it comes to the cost of living.
But more than eight million people are set to benefit from this relief measure.
However, there are tiers and a relatively strict eligibility criteria.
The maximum payment proposed under this program will be $400.
But, only Americans who file joint tax returns and have an income of up to $150,000 will get this check.
Joint filers who earn between $150,000 and $300,000 will pocket a one-time $300 payment.
Single Americans earning up to $75,000 will be in line to get a $200 check.
And, single taxpayers who earn $75,000 but less than $150,000 will get $150.
While the framework for the payments has been announced, details about the timetable remain scant.
Officials in New York have been tight-lipped about when the payments will land in bank accounts.
Payments are expected to be issued later this year, according to Governor Kathy Hochul’s office.
Last year, Hochul proposed rebates up to $500 before the figure was revised down.
But, the governor’s critics believe she was being politically opportunistic.
Hochul could face challenges for the Democratic Party’s nomination.
New York relief package
GOVERNOR Kathy Hochul has proposed a relief program that will benefit eight million Americans in New York. The program is part of an initiative designed to offset the impacts of inflation.
The maximum check sent will be $400. But, this will only go to joint tax filers who earn up to $150,000. Joint filers who earn between $150,000 and $300,000 will pocket a one-time $300 payment. Single Americans earning up to $75,000 will be in line to get a $200 check. And, single taxpayers who earn $75,000 but less than $150,000 will get $150.Jamaal Bowman, a former congressman, and Representative Ritchie Torres could challenge Hochul.
New Yorkers are split on Hochul’s performance as governor, according to Marist polling.
A survey from April revealed 39% of those surveyed approved of her performance, while 46% disapprove.
Almost six in ten voters do not want Hochul to run for re-election, including 40% of Democrats.
New Yorkers feel the quality of life in the state is declining, according to the survey.
Hochul’s package is just one relief program that has been proposed by states across the US.
Officials in Georgia are in the process of sending rebates to its residents.
The program delivers on a proposal made by Governor Brian Kemp last fall.
Under the relief initiative, the maximum check will be worth $500.
And, thousands of residents in South Carolina are set to pocket a one-time payment.
Officials say residents will get around $500 and the money comes from a $950 million pot.
