GRANADA HILLS — The Granada Hills Charter softball team remained undefeated in the West Valley League by defeating rival El Camino Real 11-1 in six innings Wednesday.
The Highlanders (22-3 overall, 7-0 league) are in first place in league while the Royals (12-11, 4-3) are in third place.
“I think we played well,” Granada Hills coach Ivan Garcia said. “They are a really good team and they play us tough every game, so we’ve been prepping for that. I think our last outing was a 2-1 win for us (April 11) and we wanted to be ready. We wanted to show that we are growing throughout the year and we did that today.”
Highlanders senior Addison Moorman pitched a complete game and held the Royals to one run and three hits with nine strikeouts.
El Camino Real scored in the top of the first first, as senior Senia Gutierrez hit a triple into left field and Sarah Delgado followed with a single to bring in Gutierrez for a 1-0 lead.
The Royals were shut out the rest of the game.
“We knew it was going to be a tough one coming in here,” El Camino Real coach Richard Russell said. “It’s been tough hitting against Addison Moorman for four years now, but I think the girls all in all did a very good job.”
The Highlanders struck for five runs in the second inning, the first of two five-run innings for them.
Granada Hills senior Giselle Merida and junior Zoe Justman each hit a single to begin the second. Senior Anabella Ramirez stepped up and sent the ball flying into left field to bring in Merida to make the score 1-1.
With bases loaded after senior Jasmine Soriano walked, senior Jocelyn Jimenez had a sacrifice hit to bring the score to 2-1.
Senior Lainey Brown kept the momentum going as she hit a single that drove in Ramirez and Soriano. Junior Elysse Diaz wrapped up the second inning with a triple to bring in Brown and and give the Highlanders a 5-1 lead.
After giving up five runs, the Royals sent in sophomore Remy Glassman to relieve freshman Audrina Gonzalez for the rest of the game.
Granada Hills scored a run in the bottom of the third inning, when Justman came home on a wild pitch.
Granada Hills added to its lead in the sixth inning. Brown hit a single into center field to bring in junior April Anaya. Diaz followed with an RBI single to make it 8-1,
Senior Samantha Esparza kept the bats singing with a double into center field to bring in Brown.
Merida finished the game with a single to right field to bring in Diaz and Esparza for the final score of 11-1.
The Highlanders finished with 10 hits.
