Ukiah Unified School District (UUSD) was informed April 29 that its federal School-Based Mental Health (SBMH) grant, funding critical student support services, has been canceled by the U.S. Department of Education.
Funding will end on Dec. 31, even though two-and-a-half years remain on the grant.
This grant currently funds 10 mental health professionals who serve the district’s most at-risk students.
“These professionals have been instrumental in addressing student suicidal ideations, expulsions, and chronic absenteeism – a lifeline for hundreds of students and families. In addition, a few administrative roles that support the mental health services are impacted,” Ukiah Unified stated in a news release.
The U.S. Department of Education’s notice said the grant conflicts with the priorities of the current administration as the basis for cancellation. The stated purpose of the grant was to increase the number of credentialed mental health service providers providing school-based mental health services to students in local LEAs with demonstrated need.
The district is actively appealing the decision through all available state and federal channels.
“Our top priority remains the health, safety, and well-being of our students,” said Superintendent Deb Kubin.
“We are frustrated and angered by this decision, which directly affects our ability to support students struggling with trauma, anxiety, and mental health challenges. We are exploring every avenue to restore this essential funding or replace it before the start of the next school year.”
The district will provide updates as the situation develops and encourages families to reach out to their school administrators with any immediate concerns.
