This new run of the play boasts an appealing selection of guest stars who are lined up to perform, Adjoa Andoh, Eddie Marsan and David Tennant among them. I was secretly hoping for Jessie Buckley on opening night and, delightfully, my wish was granted, with a lovably giggly – and heavily pregnant – Buckley bounding on stage to join in.

“I accidentally killed your eldest daughter with my car”, says the softly spoken Crouch, after informing Buckley that her character is a 46-year-old father called Andy. The deal of the bare-bones plot is this: Crouch plays a hypnotist who is unravelling after the accident and the distraught Andy goes to one of his rackety stage shows in the hope of finding some answers.
All of this is fascinating up to a point. When An Oak Tree starts gently playing with ideas of time, we find ourselves in a pleasant daze, wondering if in fact the fatal accident has even happened, or whether that too is merely another one of the myriad narrative layers.
Meta-theatricality reigns as the piece operates constantly on multiple levels (Photo: Pamela Raith)The hermetically sealed nature of the construct similarly becomes frustrating, allowing guests little scope to imprint their individuality upon proceedings. We leave the theatre unsure whether we too have been hypnotised – or maybe even duped.
