West Ranch baseball coaching staff stepping down after 15 years ...Middle East

The West Ranch baseball coaching staff is stepping down after this season — for some of them, it’s after 15 years with the program.

“All the extra time I have in my day is given to baseball,” Wildcats head coach Ryan Lindgreen said, “and I think it’s just now time for me to spend that with my kids and make sure I give them my full attention. And I could always come back to baseball. Baseball’s not going anywhere.”

Lindgreen, Casey Burrill and Brady Burrill have been coaching the Wildcats for 15 years, while Jim Wagner and Bob Cardamone have been with the group between 10 and 12 years. Each one has college or professional playing experience.

Lindgreen will continue to work at the school as a teacher and expects to take on more film/TV production classes at West Ranch.

The car rides to countless games and tournaments across the state have always featured conversations about life and plans the coaches had. This year, the topics became a little more tangible.

“We really had some serious talks about this being the end and how we want this to go for us in our last year,” Lindgreen said. “I told the team right before the season (began) in February. I let them know that this was going to be it because I didn’t want to surprise anybody at the end of the year.”

Lindgreen said players were initially shocked by the news, but the team remained focused and has seen success this season. The Wildcats won their first Foothill League title since 2016 and recorded four shutout wins in league.

There was a change in head coaches in 2020 when Lindgreen took over for Casey Burrill, but otherwise, the group and its standards have remained consistent.

“We always felt like we lived and died with baseball and hopefully the next group feels the same way,” Lindgreen said.

The depths of the West Ranch baseball website are vast and provides a thorough history of the program. The alphabetized list of alumni alone measures the success of players who have gone through the program — over half have gone on to play in college and seven have reached the professional ranks.

The Wildcats have now won four Foothill League titles since 2009 and were the league runner-up on nine other occasions.

West Ranch’s principal will handle the hiring of a new coach. Lindgreen said he has spoken with the school’s athletic directors and others in the baseball world to make sure that the high standard that’s been set is perpetuated.

“We want to make sure that we’re giving our kids the best product,” Lindgreen said. “We also know that we’re giving them life lessons and we want to make sure that they’re going to become amazing human beings. We’re hoping that baseball can teach a lot of those principles along with trying to win.”
