Former Manchester United prodigy James Wilson has been released by Northampton Town.
Wilson was one of 11 players let go by the Cobblers after they finished 19th in League One.
Wilson, who was seen as a future star at Man United, is on the lookout for a new clubThe 29-year-old failed to net a single goal from his 12 appearances across all competitions.
Wilson was largely consigned to appearances off the bench as he started just twice, one of which came in the Carabao Cup against Wycombe Wanderers while the other was in the EFL Trophy as he assisted one of Northampton’s two goals against Notts County.
The other players who have been cut by Northampton following the season’s conclusion comprise of Tyler Magloire, Jack Sowerby, Nik Tzanev, Ali Koiki, Liam McCarron, Harvey Lintott, Akin Odimayo, Will Hondermarck, TJ Eyoma and Reuben Wyatt.
In a club statement, Cobblers boss Kevin Nolan thanked all the players for their services as he targeted some fresh faces in the summer.
“We have made some difficult decisions and it is never nice having to tell a player that their contract is not being renewed,” Nolan said.
“Some of these players have been at the club a number of years and have played a big part here, helping the club enjoy some good times over the last few years, and all of the departing players will leave with our thanks and best wishes.
“We believe we have a good core of players here, both in terms of ability and culture, which is very important, and we are excited to be entering discussions with our chosen targets to build on and add to that over the course of the summer.”
Wilson will now look for his fifth permanent home since he was released by the Red Devils at the end of the 2018/19 campaign, which brought an end to his 17-year association with the club having joined at age seven in 2002.
He burst onto the scene when he scored twice on his senior debut for United in a 3-1 win over Hull City in May 2014.
Wilson’s explosive start to life earned him plenty of praise from then-manager Louis van Gaal, with the Dutchman going as far as declaring him ‘one of the brightest young English prospects’ and as having the potential to succeed Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie.
Wilson joined Northampton last summer after leaving Port ValeGettySuch was Van Gaal’s belief in Wilson, he sold Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez to solidify the youngster’s status as one for the future.
United legend Ryan Giggs was another who lavished praise on Wilson.
“Wilson is a natural goalscorer, but he has got more to his game than that,” Giggs said.
“He can run at people, he has got pace and he is a clever player.”
However, Wilson would make just 19 more appearances for United and score only twice as he struggled to make his mark in loans at Brighton, Derby County, Sheffield United and Aberdeen.
Aberdeen took a punt on Wilson prior to the 2019/20 campaign but he lasted just six months in Scotland before he returned to England at Salford City, a club co-owned by United legends Gary Neville, Giggs, Phil Neville, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and David Beckham.
Wilson bagged ten goals in 35 appearances for Salford across 18 months as he joined Port Vale in the summer of 2021.
The 29-year-old spent three seasons with the Valiants where he featured 105 times and registered 23 goals, although his time with the club was blighted by injuries.
He was released by Port Vale at the end of the 2023/24 campaign and was snapped up by Northampton, but he must now once again seek pastures new in the off-season.
