The Colorado Peaches, a senior women’s softball team founded in Greeley from more than 30 years ago, will honor one of their pioneering members later this month during a game against a team from Fort Collins.
Greeley resident Chloe Childers started the Peaches in 1991 with fellow resident LaVerne Dressor. Dresser died in January 2023 at age 91.
Childers, 94, no longer plays with the Peaches, who are now based in Lakewood. The team will return to Greeley on May 19 for the first Chloe Childers Senior Women’s Softball Classic and Clinic at the University of Northern Colorado.

(Courtesy/Heidi Muller).The Peaches will meet the Colorado Sugar Beats for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. May 19 at UNC’s Gloria Rodriguez Field on 17th Avenue in Greeley. Parking is available at Bethel Baptist Church across the street from the field. Some bleacher seating is available at field level. Spectators may also bring lawn chair or blankets to watch the games from the hill behind the field.
The day will be hosted by Bears head coach Dedeann Pendleton-Helm and the UNC softball program, which begins play in the Big Sky Conference Tournament this week.
The Peaches and Sugar Beats will play two games, five innings or 50 minutes in length, as they prepare for tournaments this summer and fall. The teams are scheduled to play in the Wyoming Senior Olympics from June 18-22 in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and in the Huntsman World Senior Games from Oct. 6-18 in St. George, Utah.
The purpose of the day to celebrate women’s senior softball in northern Colorado, and the organizers will try to make the day an annual event, according to Peaches coach and UNC professor Heidi Muller.
“Both teams have been integral in building opportunities for senior women in Colorado,” Muller said in an email.
The Sugar Beats were founded in 2023 by Johnna Bavoso, a Fort Collins resident and UNC graduate. Bavoso’s husband, Art, is the Sugar Beats manager.
The Peaches athletes range in age from 62 years old to their early 90s. The Sugar Beats are a younger team with athletes in their 60s and 70s, Muller said.
Muller said the Peaches have been based in Lakewood since 2017. They practice Tuesday mornings at Addenbrooke Park. The Sugar Beats practice Monday mornings at Triple Crown Sports in Fort Collins.
The Childers Classic and Clinic will begin with an opening ceremony, during which Childers will be recognized. The day will end with a meet-and-greet after the games, Muller said.
