The first international passenger plane of Royal Jordanian Airlines touched down at Aleppo International Airport today, Tuesday, May 6, after a hiatus of 14 years.
The official Syrian news agency (SANA) confirmed that the first Royal Jordanian flight arrived at Aleppo International Airport today, Tuesday, May 6.
Jordan’s Al-Mamlaka channel reported the launch of the first regular flights from Amman to Aleppo International Airport.
Aleppo Governorate considered the landing of the first international aircraft at Aleppo Airport as a reflection of progress in restoring aviation activity and reconnecting the city to regional flight networks.
Royal Jordanian Airlines is the first international airline to land at Aleppo International Airport following the fall of the previous regime on December 8, 2024, and it intends to operate three weekly flights.
This step follows the operation of Royal Jordanian’s first trial flight to Aleppo International Airport on March 23, to assess the airport’s readiness.
Samer Majali, the CEO of Royal Jordanian, stated to Al-Mamlaka channel at that time that once the preparations are complete, official flights to Aleppo Airport will be launched.
This came following an official request submitted by Royal Jordanian to operate its flights to Aleppo International Airport after having previously been allowed to resume operations to Damascus International Airport.
Royal Jordanian resumed its flights to Damascus International Airport after the fall of the regime in mid-January of this year.
Aleppo Airport was officially rehabilitated after over three months of closure following the regime’s fall, with the first domestic flight landing on March 18.
The flight was coming from Damascus International Airport, and the resumption of the airport’s operation was attended by the Governor of Aleppo, Azzam al-Gharib, and several political and religious figures.
Al-Gharib told Enab Baladi on February 7 that the preparation of Aleppo International Airport was completed in a “record time” thanks to the efforts of the working staff, explaining that most of the existing damages were repaired.
At that time, he confirmed that the airport would resume domestic and international flights to become a “point of attraction for all those wishing to visit Syria, and Aleppo in particular.”
The first plane took off from Damascus International Airport to Aleppo in a trial flight on December 18, 2024.
