The Arizona Wildcats announced on Monday that the men’s basketball program has hired Brandon Chappell as a new assistant coach.
Chappell got his coaching start at the Division I level with Lamar (2017-21) before going to UNLV (2021-22) and then spent the last three years at Texas under former head coach Rodney Terry. Terry was let go by the Longhorns and replaced by former Wildcats head coach Sean Miller, who did not retain Chappell.
“It is exciting to welcome Brandon and his family to the Arizona basketball family,” Arizona head coach Tommy Lloyd said in a statement. “He is a high-character person that brings energy and enthusiasm every day that makes those around him want to strive for more. He will fit in great with the culture that we have built, and we can’t wait to get started.”
Chappell’s start in coaching included a stint as a graduate assistant at Northern Arizona, under then-head coach Jack Murphy, who is now Arizona’s associate head coach.
Chappell played collegiate basketball at Lamar in the mid-2000’s and then went on to play five years professionally overseas.
Tucson.com’s Bruce Pascoe notes this is the first time Lloyd has hired an assistant outside of the program since he took over in 2021. Chappell will be taking the place of retiring assistant Steve Robinson. Robinson was a collegiate coach for 42 years.
