Judge not, lest ye be arrested
Re: “FBI arrests judge accused of helping man evade immigration authorities,” April 26 news story
Like many who have watched Donald Trump’s first 100 days in office in his second term, I have been shocked and horrified.
I have seen judges arrested, people snatched up on the streets and deported to one of the worst prisons in the world, and the Constitution of the United States being totally ignored.
I constantly ask myself how the Republicans in the House and Senate can repeatedly ignore their oath of office to uphold the Constitution of the United States. Is the fear of being primaried and possibly losing their job really worth sacrificing everything they supposedly stood for when they took their oath of office?
Never have two men done more damage to our great country in so short a period of time as Donald Trump and Elon Musk.
I can only hope that the American people will finally stand up to the two bullies. Apparently, our Republican leaders cannot or will not do so and do the jobs they were elected to do.

If the United States Constitution was authored to create and sustain a set of checks and balances among the three branches of government, would that mean that if a president could arrest a judge, then it would also be possible for a judge to have a president arrested? In a democratic system with a balance of powers, that would seem logical.

Strategists of the MAGA tornado have unleashed their latest tactic to divide and overturn our historic American democracy — by arresting a judge!
It was immensely intimidating and headline-grabbing, now threatening every judge who might make decisions disloyal to executive orders with similar vigilante justice. They face temporary imprisonment alongside inmates they jailed — plus suspension from judicial duties with trials pending and verdicts appealed.

Debate over how transgender athletes should play high school sports
Re: “Should transgender athletes be allowed to compete on girls teams in Colorado high schools?” April 27 pro/con commentary
Thank you to Krista Kafer for her consistent, logical opinion that female sports are not intended for biological males. It’s not hateful or bigoted to say that female sports teams should not be required to include any biological males, whether the males are shorter than average, late bloomers, or girl-identifying. And they are not banned from sports; none of these males are prohibited from trying out for the male teams.
Megan Schrader would like to see co-ed sports through middle school. This implies that she recognizes the difference between males and females at a certain age, but she still wants to make female teams include biological males.
I agree that some girls are able to compete on the boys’ teams, but that doesn’t make a good argument for allowing males to be on the girls’ teams. If there is a combination of sexes in sports, eventually, the two categories of “boys” and “girls” sports will transform into “Top Competitors” and “Everyone Else.”
Dan Gryboski, Broomfield
I am a bit befuddled that Krista Kafer feels like she is in a position to speak for “the victims” of transgender athletes. She, unlike Megan Schrader, makes no claims of being an athlete or having ever played on a team with boys or transgender girls. She doesn’t speak of seeing her own diminutive daughter being passed over for stardom or scholarships because of the presence of a bigger, stronger teammate.
Are complainants (I suspect parents) also complaining about the presence of the biological girl who happens to be six foot tall and weighs 190? One doesn’t have to be transgender to be larger and stronger than everybody else on the team. In fact, most basketball teams are happy to have a tall outlier. It is the coach’s job to figure out which positions go to which athletes. I wonder how much of this dust-up about student-athletes really comes from the girls and their coaches. I suspect what we are hearing is a reflection of the hang-ups of a few helicopter parents.

Megan Schrader has a serious chip on her shoulder, one that is so consuming that it obliterates common sense.
She equates allowing boys, those who have the XY chromosomes, to “play with,” “play together with” or “playing on” girls’ teams, those who have XX chromosomes, with co-ed sports.
She invokes her own life experience with co-ed soccer and football to make her point. “I golf with men, and I ski with my nephews.” I’m sure she does but that’s quite different than competing against them.
Co-ed sports? I’m all for them. Boys and girls can and should play together, not against one another in soccer and football like Schrader describes.
After lamenting that “society” is responsible for the “focus… on their gender transition,” that huge chip on her shoulder manifests with the declaration, “Women are done being held back.”
Media is the culprit, not society, in the intense and gratuitous focus. Most outside the realm of mainstream media are relatively and rightly apathetic. And women have “been done being held back” for over 50 years since Title IX became law. Allowing boys to compete against girls for important rewards, including trophies, scholarship opportunities, and the self-worth that comes with winning on an even playing field, deprives young women of the protection afforded by the law. That’s wrong.
Schrader hedges her bet by suggesting that it might be unfair for “boys and girls playing together … at the end of middle school.” I think she means compete, not play together, but she offers that at the risk of diluting her argument.
Equating the issue of transgender athletes competing against our daughters and sisters to co-ed sports is just silly and not worthy of serious consideration.

Your dueling editorials on the fairness of transgender sports competition seemed to be at odds regarding the philosophy of what transgender sports competition is all about.
Megan Schrader is talking about boys and girls playing together. Krista Kafer is talking about competition for titles, prizes and records. Sports requiring physical strength should not be considered “fair competition” when mixing the sexes. You can not make this right with rhetoric. If you are talking about sports requiring just talent such as darts or shooting, then you have a different arena. If you are talking about swimming, weightlifting, and other physically demanding sports where size and strength are involved, there is nothing that makes the sexes equal except god given talent, size and strength, where the men usually come out better equipped. Co-ed sports like soccer and football are not the same as competition.

I should ask, “Why” do you devote pro and con space to transgender high school athletes, but I know the answer.
It is good for audience, in a simplistic way. Maybe not so good longterm.
Taking a quick look at statistics, I see single-digit participation at best. How relevant is that compared to disappearing snowpack and fire danger?
Of course, both writers failed to include any numbers, simply opinion.
I stopped watching Nightly NBC News because I was tired of celebrity stories, à la National Inquirer.
I may end up not extending my subscription depending on your level of pandering to irrelevant socio-political subjects.

Our laws should serve all of God’s people
Re: “You can’t legislate acceptance of an ideology,” April 27 letter to the editor
All these years spent getting college degrees, I am very disappointed that I never learned that the Bible was part of the documents that our country uses as “laws of the land.” Yes, I did learn that I have the freedom to practice my chosen religion without impingement of government, so I’m really not clear what point the pastor is making in his letter. Should we not have laws that protect the freedoms of transgender persons, freedoms that non-transgender persons have? If one’s action reflects their “religious” beliefs, is it all right to deny freedoms to those who do not have the same “religious” beliefs?
When quoting Genesis 1:27, are you saying that when a transgender person is “created” that person is not in God’s image? Shouldn’t we be spending our time and energy looking for ways to serve all of God’s people?
Fortunately, the Constitution protects the pastor and his congregation to practice their beliefs just as God protects mine. The Bible contains so many instances of Jesus reaching out to the poor, the widows, the disenfranchised. Perhaps those of us who practice Christianity should more closely follow His teachings than set up roadblocks to exclude some of God’s children from the rights guaranteed by the actual laws under the Constitution. Remember, God is watching.
