measles cases in Texas, which has reached 683 according to state health officials, underscores a significant public health concern. This figure represents a 3% increase over a mere three days, contributing to a nationwide total of nearly 1,000 confirmed cases across multiple jurisdictions. The outbreak has particularly impacted West Texas, where approximately 481 cases have been reported. The rise in infections is partly attributed to declining vaccination rates and the spread of misinformation regarding vaccine efficacy and safety .
The United States and Canada are experiencing one of their worst measles outbreaks in years, while the virus has also crossed to neighbouring Mexico.
A total of 2,500 cases and four deaths have been reported in the outbreaks across the three countries. Vaccine hesitancy has been blamed.
Texas Department of State Health Services said.
"There is a slight reduction in the number of new cases and so we do see some slowing, but it's important to note that what we're seeing is not a single outbreak," said Caitlin Rivers, associate professor at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
While outbreaks in some counties may be waning, others are just "beginning to heat up", so the overall case numbers "doesn't really tell the whole story," she added.
Eighty nine patients have been hospitalized, over the course of the outbreak, the health department said.
This year's tally of cases is likely an undercount, officials and experts have said, citing anecdotes of unreported infections. The unusually high severity of this year's wave also suggests many mild cases of spread are going undiagnosed.
Canada have confirmed more than 1,000 measles cases so far this year, after record outbreaks there. The U.S. has tallied at least 935 this year, according to the CDC.
