The San Diego Wave’s winning streak continued Saturday evening in a dramatic victory against Bay FC from a winning goal scored in the 95th minute.
The Wave defeated Bay FC 2-1 with a winning goal by center back Trinity Armstrong well into stoppage time.
Armstrong nailed a header shot into the goal with stoppage time nearly expired and was met by an eruption of cheers from fans.
“It’s such a blessing and such an honor that I was able to get that goal out there today,” Armstrong said during the post-match press conference.
Armstrong, a 17-year-old Frisco, Texas, native, was signed to a three-year contract by the Wave in January following a NCAA National Championship win during her freshman season with the University of North Carolina.
“We were really pushing in the second half – it was great to see the mentality,” head coach Jonas Eidevall said.
“We believe in what we’re trying to do and we’re persistent,” he added.
There was a substantial wind and a light drizzle during the match’s first half, but the gloomy weather didn’t dampen the spirits of the fans that came to cheer their team.
The score was tied 1-1 at the end of the first half. The Wave struck first via a header by center back Kennedy Wesley at the five-minute mark of the match.
Bay FC struck back, however, with a right-footed shot by striker Karlie Lima during the match’s 17th minute.
The Wave nearly scored again during the 44th minute, but a shot on goal bounced off the crossbar.
The teams ended the half tied following an additional 60 seconds of stoppage time after the first 45 minutes.
San Diego also won the possession game during the full 90-plus minutes, controlling the ball for over 60% of the match.
The Wave took 16 shots, including five shots on goal, compared to six total shots for Bay FC, with two on goal.
The Wave have now won three straight games.
The team came into the match having beaten both the Chicago Stars and Racing Louisville FC on the road the previous two weeks.
San Diego’s next home match is scheduled for May 10 against the Portland Thorns. The team then travels to the East Coast for a match against NJ/NY Gotham FC on May 16, a Friday.
With the victory against Bay FC, the Wave’s record now stands at four wins, two losses and one draw, with 13 points.
The team sits at third in the National Women’s Soccer League standings, behind the Kansas City Current and Orlando Pride, both of which have five wins, two losses, no ties and 15 points apiece.
