Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday said he hopes there will be no need for nuclear weapons in Ukraine.
During a preview of an interview with Russian state media, which was shared with the Associated Press, Putin said the country has "enough strength and means to bring what was started in 2022 to a logical conclusion with the outcome Russia requires."
When asked about Ukrainian strikes in Russian territory, Putin responded, "There has been no need to use those (nuclear) weapons ... and I hope they will not be required."
Putin also denied claims that Russia launched a full-scale invasion against Ukraine during its 2014 annexation of Crimea, calling it a "special military operation."
“The country was not ready for such a frontal confrontation with the entire collective West,” he said, adding that he “sincerely sought to solve the problem of Donbas by peaceful means.”
Putin noted that the Ukraine and Russia reconciliation is "inevitable."
Putin's statements come after U.S. officials signed a long-awaited minerals deal with Ukrainian officials last week to secure safety guarantees as the conflict continues. The agreement will grant the U.S. access to oil, natural gas, rare earth minerals and other Ukrainian resources in exchange for aid, which has become critical in its defense against Russia.
However, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said a peace deal between the two countries is still in the process.
“I think we know where Ukraine is, and we know where Russia is right now and where [Russian President Vladimir] Putin is. They’re still far apart,” he told Fox News’s Sean Hannity on Friday. “They’re closer, but they’re still far apart.”
