Abdul Carter is getting used to rejection.
The No.3 pick in the 2025 NFL draft is still looking for a uniform number as a New York Giants player.
Abdul Carter will play for the New York Giants but is struggling to find a uniform numberGettyCarter initially wanted to wear 56, which has been retired in honor of Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor.
The all-time great swiftly rejected that request.
Carter’s choice raised some eyebrows in the NFL world, with New England Patriots legends Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman shocked he would even ask for the number.
“Was he serious asking for LT’s number?,” Gronkowski said.
“Yeah, you were a high draft pick, but LT is an absolute legend.
“The best to do it. One of the best defenders of all time. Like, you gotta prove yourself.”
“That’s crazy. Just asking for LT’s number. And I’m glad that LT shut him down like that.”
Edelman agreed, saying: “That was such a LT response. Go make your own freaking number, kid.
“Can we read a room? And it’s not even the room, it’s the football galaxy. The fact that he even asked, that’s crazy to me. Maybe he’ll go make another one.
“And people say, oh, the 11 thing. But they give everyone 11 at Penn State. No one ever puts on the 56.”
Gronkowski has slammed Carter’s jersey requestGetty Carter wanted Lawrence Taylor’s 56 number which is retiredGettyCarter then wanted to wear No.11, which is retired for Phil Simms — a former quarterback who played 14 seasons for the Giants.
The defensive end wore the jersey at Penn State and wrote: “It would be an HONOR.”
However, Simms rejected this request as well, after initially being open to the idea.
He told longtime New York Daily News writer Gary Myers on Friday that he was “outvoted by his family” and his No. 11 will remain retired by the Giants.
Such roadblocks in securing a number has seen Carter joke about the situation, writing on X: “Damn at this point imma be out there with just my last name on my jersey, no number.
“Jkjk, It’s all Love. Just wanna play Football!”

Despite Gronskowski’s shock at Carter’s request, unretiring a number for a first-round draft pick isn’t completely new to the Giants.
Last year’s first-round pick, Malik Nabers, wore No. 1 after receiving permission from the family of the late Ray Flaherty.
That didn’t result in success for the team but with new options at quarterback and Carter bolstering the defense when he eventually settles on a jersey, that could change in 2025.
