Chido Obi-Martin set a new club record by making his first Premier League start for Manchester United.
The teenage striker was named in the starting line-up for Sunday’s trip to Brentford by Ruben Amorim.
Obi-Martin has become United’s youngest ever Premier League starterGetty The teenager started against Brentford aged 17 years and 156 daysGettyIt came at 17 years and 156 days old for Obi-Martin, making him the youngest-ever player to start a Premier League match for United.
The youngster was also making his seventh appearance for the Red Devils first-team since arriving at Old Trafford.
Obi-Martin completed a move from Arsenal back in October to link up with the United academy.
He was handed his Premier League debut in February, appearing as a substitute against Fulham.
The 17-year-old is still awaiting his first goal for the Red Devils.
Despite that, he has already scored 12 times in just 10 appearances for their Under-18s.
Explaining his decision to hand Obi-Martin his first league start, Amorim told Sky Sports: “We need to focus a lot on our young players.
“For me, it is not a massive game for Chido. I know it’s important for Chido, but I don’t want a lot of pressure on Chido.
“He played really well in the minutes against Wolverhampton. I feel he is ready to cope with the demands of the Premier League.”
As for rotating his squad, he added: “It is really hard because we want to improve in the table. In this moment I think everyone can understand our choice.”
Obi-Martin joined the Red Devils from Arsenal in OctoberGetty The forward has already made seven first-team appearancesGettyAmorim made a string of changes from Thursday’s win over Athletic Bilbao for the clash with the Bees.
Along with Obi-Martin, academy starlets Harry Amass and Tyler Fredricson were also included in the starting line-up.
The Portuguese’s XI had an average age of just 22 years and 270 days.
It is the third youngest starting line-up in Premier League history and the youngest since 2009.
Middlesbrough set the current record of 20 years and 181 days against Fulham back in May 2006.
The Red Devils took a giant leap towards the Europa League final in midweek.
Their victory in Spain means they will defend a 3-0 lead in this week’s second leg.
Meanwhile, a win at Brentford on Sunday would lift them up to 13th in the table.
